It is funny how some thoughts come together at the same time. Especially on the internet.<\/p>\n

Thursday I came across this article<\/a> on the “Misfits” exhibition about the fit of women’s clothing.<\/p>\n

Then Friday morning a friend of mine, who subscribes to Poem a day<\/a>, shared this poem on Facebook:<\/p>\n

The Phantoms for Which Clothes Are Designed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sewing patterns are designed for imaginary<\/p>\n

people, based on average measurements<\/p>\n

taken in the 1930s by the WPA<\/p>\n

and adjusted over the decades by the Industry.<\/p>\n

I sew a Misses 14, designed for a woman<\/p>\n

5\u20195\u201d to 5\u20196\u201d, 36\/28\/38,<\/p>\n

which is to say no one, so I alter the pattern to fit a phantom of me<\/p>\n

instead of a phantom of her.<\/p>\n

She doesn\u2019t need any more dresses.<\/p>\n

Which brought to mind a crystal clear memory of a camping trip where it somehow came about that all of the women present were wearing the same size jeans, and none of us were capable of sharing clothing.<\/p>\n

So I did this.<\/p>\n
